Former English international Wayne Rooney is moving from Everton FC to DC United in the North American professional league MLS, according to British media reports.
Rooney has signed a two-year contract with the US club, the sports news channel “Sky Sports News” reported on Twitter. The 32-year-old striker, who returned to his youth club Everton after 13 years with record English champions Manchester United before last season’s Premier League campaign, is due to arrive in Washington this week and start training with his new team.
Officially Rooney is not allowed to join the team until July 10th, when the transfer window in the MLS opens. He could make his debut just four days later in the match against the Vancouver Whitecaps, which is also the opening match for the team’s new home ground.
The $400 million Audi Field can seat 20,000 spectators. With two victories out of twelve games of the season, the team from the US capital is currently last in the Eastern Conference. A descent is not possible in the MLS.
